Tranquil
Rises
The aptly named Tranquil Rises is a group of
log cabins surrounded by rolling hills in the picturesque Flowerdale
Valley, northeast of Melbourne.
On my first visit I awoke to the warmth of an open fireplace and stepped
outside the cabin to the peaceful sounds of nature and mist covered
hilltops. Less than ten feet away a large lake with a mirror surface
was disturbed every now and then by a rising trout.
This fantastic getaway will suit everyone who enjoys the great
outdoors or wants to escape the city and relax in cosy comfort.
For Anglers,
the main attraction is the establishment’s private trout fishery,
which is great for experienced fly-fishers or for those who want to
learn how to use a fly rod and line.

Another
attraction less than an hour’s drive away is Fraser’s
National Park. Situated on the shores of Lake Eildon the
park comprises
27,750ha of rugged hills with open woodlands through to dense
forest. The park has extraordinary scenery, an array of wildlife,
natural historic features, and a wide range of recreational
activities.
Closer
by, there is also the Tallarook State Forest which covers
an area of 5,100ha
and is a popular recreation area for camping, Hang Gliding,
rock climbing, car and motorcycle touring , horse riding and
bush walking. The Main features of the forest are Mount Hickey,

For those interested in bird life, there is a great variety
to keep you entertained from Wedgetail eagles
soaring the ridgeline, to the beautiful warble of magpies first
thing in the morning. If you’re lucky you may even spot
a native King Parrot; their name was given to the nearby flowing
stream, the King Parrot Creek, by explores Hume and Hovell.

Accommodation

Inside
the main cabin
Tranquil Rises has two log cabins set amongst a number of lakes. Each
Cabin has an open fireplace, a gas stove and barbeque burner, as
well as pots, pans and cutlery. There’s a spacious dining
area with beautiful varnished log tables where you can enjoy your
meal and chat about the one that got away. Each cabin consists
of four bunk beds. If you want to sleep under the stars there are
ample unpowered tent sites on grassy areas.
The fishing at Tranquil
Rises like the accommodation is great. You can fish independently
with your own equipment on a number of lakes containing brown
trout, rainbow trout and golden Perch.
Alternatively you can hire the services of Ray Butterworth who runs
Tranquil Rises and guides for all methods of fishing on his lakes or
on the King Parrot Creek. He also runs special streamcraft and beginner
casting days. Full days with Ray include lunch and drinks.
Another great aspect of Ray’s operation is the construction of
an artificial stream. Anglers can experience the fun of fishing and
learn techniques that will enhance their streamcraft on public waterways.
All fishing is catch and release and a fishing license is only required
when fishing the King Parrot Creek. Ray cannot provide these licenses
but you’ll pass plenty of tackle shops and shell service stations
on your way up from Melbourne.
Tranquil Rises can accommodate
angling clubs, catering for up to 20 people in the cabin and
on tent sites. There is also car parking for guests and visitors
with all small grocery items available at the general store
in town. Dog are allowed under supervision.

King Parrot Creek and Feeder Streams
King Parrot Creek offers excellent fishing to all methods, particularly
lure and fly. There are a few feeder creeks such as Silver, Wallaby,
Stony, Chyser and Pheasant, which are also worth fishing although they
are quite challenging.
Mid Goulburn
River
The Mid Goulburn River at its junction with the King Parrot can be
fished either up or downstream. The river contains native fish such
as silver, golden and Macquarie Perch (Protected species), as well
as Murray Cod. All methods of fishing do well, with bait at top of
the list.
Yea and Murrindindi Rivers
The Yea River runs through the township of Yea and offers excellent
bait fishing. The Murrindindi is a feeder stream and provides great
lure and fly-fishing for trout.
