Timboon House

The Historic Bed and Breakfast

There are many countryside attractions in Victoria, but one nestled amongst the surrounds of Camperdown really stood out on a recent visit. On a sunny day in summer I arrived to find Timboon House, a unique and beautiful establishment, set in magnificent gardens including over 350 roses. Its charm continued when I met its owners John and Denise, who showed me every part of this old colonial building detailing its rich historic past.

Timboon House

This establishment really affected my emotions taking me from the present to the past with each room entered, tasteful antique furnishing set the scene and I had many visions of what it must have been like back in the days of the early settlers.

Set on 2.5 hectares of garden and farmland, Timboon House was built as a coach inn in 1855. The two storey structure retains most of is original features. There are also heritage listed trees, stables and archaeologically preserved land- a perfect setting for that weekend getaway or overnight stay.
Located just 2 kilometers from Camperdown, Timboon House is your ideal base for exploring or fishing this rich and diverse region of Australia, or simply relaxing and enjoying the ambience of this beautifully appointed bed and breakfast.

The Great Ocean Road
The Great Ocean Road takes visitors on one of Australia’s greatest and most inspiring coastal drives. From Torquay near Geelong, to Nelson almost 300 kilometers to the west, the road snakes past cliffs, scenic lookouts, waterfalls, rainforests and sunken ships.
One of the most visited stretches is the Port Campbell National Park, home to native bushland and fauna. Buffeted by wild seas and fierce winds, the coastline has been sculpted over millions of years to form a series of striking natural features such as the Twelve Apostles and London Bridge.

Portland and Port Fairy
Historic towns such as Port Fairy and Portland allow you to enjoy seafaring village life, with their fishing wharves, old pubs and beautifully preserved colonial buildings. A number of ships from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries have foundered off the rugged shipwreck coast, and their histories are recounted in many of the museums in the region.

Freshwater Fishing

Timboon House is central to not only some of the best freshwater fishing destinations in Victoria, but also to many saltwater fishing locations along the Great Ocean Road. For the freshwater fisherman the two major destinations are Lake’s Purrembete and Bullen Merri. Both providing excellent populations of wild brown trout, rainbow trout and redfin and are the only two locations with wild populations of Chinook salmon.

Over the last few years Lake Bullen Merri received stocking of Australian Bass which at the time of writing were doing well. Great freshwater river fishing also exists along the Great Ocean Road with popular spots including the upper reaches of the Aire River near Glenaire and the Gellibrand River near Colac.

Saltwater Fishing

Great Ocean Road also offers the angler great and diverse fishing at places like Lorne and Apollo Bay. At the Lorne pier, mullet, garfish and Trevally are targeted along with Australian salmon and barracuda. At Apollo Bay, the inshore fishing can be fantastic and the safe Harbour and launching ramp make fishing very accessible. Good-sized catches of silver Trevally, snapper, shark, King George whiting, Australian salmon and flathead are common. For offshore fishing, try Ingoldsby Reef out from Anglesea, with whiting and snapper on the inshore side and Australian salmon, kingfish and pike outside.

Patrons of Timboon have freezer facilities available to them to keep their catch nice and fresh for your return trip home with fishing licenses, tackle and equipment available in the town of Camperdown.
